Researchers recently explored differences in glucose and fructose metabolism in pancreatic cancer cells and found that fructose was especially good at allowing cancer cells to multiply more quickly (aka allowing the cancer to progress more quickly). Fructose occurs naturally in fruit and artificially in sweeteners (such as high fructose corn syrup). These findings have major implications for cancer patients: Perhaps eating less fructose (yes, that means less fruit) might be a an additional route to fighting cancer. These findings concerning the harmful effects of fructose (independent of source) have a seat next to previous research associating fructose with high blood pressure, obesity, diabetes, and heart disease.
